Benigno Aquino Jr. , right, talk with police and others outside a standoff at the Philippines Marines Headquarters in Manila. The potential threat to President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo’s leadership ended peacefully after disgruntled marine officers agreed to end a five-hour standoff that began when their commander was relieved of his duties. The officers appeared to back down when their appeal for people to defy a ban on rallies and turn out to protect them "from aggression" drew only about 3,000-4,000 opposition figures, leftist leaders and their followers…. Ten years after the trailblazing Prius, electric cars have finally hit a high gear
With government incentives, public acceptance and increasing plaudits from the motoring press, electric cars could be on the road to success Toby Litt test-drives the new Toyota Prius hybrid car. Photograph: David Levene It’s nearly a decade since the original Prius introduced hybrid petrol- to the UK in 2000. Produced in Japan a decade ago, the Prius – like its main rival by Honda – used a battery and electric motor to recover energy wasted from braking and rolling down hills. The result: one-third the emissions of a conventional car…. Continue Reading

Putin’s First Move, Freeing Russia
It has become common fodder amongst the Oligarchical press of the West, specifically that of the Anglo-Sphere, to wax thoughtlessly about the corruption of Russia. Like screeching Scottish banshees they wail their dearth of stolen treasures. Of course, one must now wonder which treasures, when speaking of Russia, are these lepers of decent thought alluding to? Peal away the dead skin of their rotting hides and the lies of than President Putin and his clique stealing… Continue Reading
Ricardo Arjona offers more that songs in his concert
The Guatemalan singer-songwriter Ricardo Arjona doesn’t only make music in his concerts — though only isn’t a word you’d use for his songs — but musical theater. His sold-out show at the AmericanAirlines Arena on Thursday night was a wonderful exercise in playful concept and passionate narrative. And richly captivating music as well. Like the best songwriters, Arjona is an avid storyteller; but unlike most musical artists, he uses all kinds of theatrical and visual devices in addition to music to tell his stories, in a kind of musical pop performance art. The tour is in support of Arjona’s album 5to Piso (5th Floor), which offers a vision of urban… Continue Reading

Swine flu’s next round
Distributing vaccinations this fall must be handled intelligently. Health care professionals and the public must be educated. Laying out a priority list for who should get the swine flu vaccine is one thing, but getting those vulnerable groups to get flu shots may be another entirely. Recommendations released this week by the Centers for Disease Control include doses for people who have not been particularly eager to be vaccinated —… Continue Reading

Here’s a romance that stays interesting
Boy meets girl, boy loses girl, boy tries to win girl back: It’s a tale you’ve heard a million times before. But it’s told in such a relatable, inventive way in “500 Days of Summer,” it almost feels like the first time. It is the first time for director Marc Webb, who puts his music video and commercial background to good use with stylish tactics that are lively – a cheeky dance sequence, perfect song choices, a clever use of split screen – but never feel gratuitous. And the script from Scott… Continue Reading
Exxon Mobil profit plunges in step with oil, gas prices
Exxon Mobil Corp. on Thursday reported its lowest profit in nearly six years, a 66 percent plunge from the second quarter a year ago as the world’s biggest publicly traded oil company confronted sharply lower crude and gas prices and anemic demand for refined products. For the king of corporate profit records, it marked the third straight quarter for lower year-over-year earnings, providing a clear picture of how demand for oil and gasoline has evaporated. Exxon Mobil, based in Irving, Texas, said earnings for the April-June period came to $3.95 billion, or 81 cents a share. That was down from $11.68 billion, or $2.22 a share, a year ago, a record at the time. Excluding one-time items, net… Continue Reading
