Brazil plans mega push for tourism

Text: FLORIANOPOLIS(BRAZIL): Will tourism be the next wave for Brazil? For, it is the $40-billion travel and tourism sector that is driving the Brazilian economy. Bordering almost every country in South America, Brazil is making an all-out effort to woo global tourists. “Every country dreams of rich tourists, those who spend thousands of dollars. But we must recognise that most human beings are not rich enough to afford luxurious holidays. And even European tourists have the conscience to spend only what they are actually able to spend,” noted Brazil president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva at the just-concluded, two-day… Continue Reading

FNC Points Out Media Double Standard in Sotomayor & Gonzales/Thomas

On Wednesday’s The O’Reilly Factor, FNC’s Bill O’Reilly and Bernard Goldberg talked about the double standard of the New York Times in ignoring the life story of former Attorney General Alberto Gonzales during his confirmation, while playing up a similar life background in the liberal Judge Sonia Sotomayor. O’Reilly opened his discussion with Goldberg reminding viewers of Gonzales’s history of growing up in poverty, his service in the Air Force, and his Harvard education: Continue Reading

Leno Calls Disgraced Democrat Spitzer a Republican

On Monday’s Tonight Show on NBC, Jay Leno incorrectly called New York’s former Democratic Governor Eliot Spitzer a Republican during the show’s monologue as the joked about Republican sex scandals. Inspired by John McCain’s daughter Meghan’s recent declaration that she is a "pro-sex Republican," Leno used her comment to poke fun at Republican Senator David Vitter of Louisiana, as well as Democrat Spitzer, who were both revealed to have hired prostitutes. But Leno’s joke assumed both disgraced politicians were Republicans: "Don’t confuse that with other Republicans like Senator Vitter and Eliot Spitzer. They like to get their sex from a pro." US: Unclear troop number remaining in Iraq cities

BAGHDAD — Thirty days before the deadline to withdraw U.S. combat forces from Iraq’s urban areas, it is still unknown how many troops will remain in cities as commanders determine their new roles, a U.S. general said Sunday. The U.S. military has repeatedly said it will abide by the requirements of an U.S.-Iraqi security agreement, but has released little publicly about how it will meet the June 30 deadline or what the new distribution of its forces in Iraq will look like. “It remains to be seen what the numbers will be,” Army Brig. Gen. Keith Walker, commander of the Iraqi Assistance Group, told reporters during a briefing in Baghdad. More World News Wire Fighting Taliban _ if US patrols… Continue Reading

There is no consensus on climate-change policy

Sir, The letter (May 28) from the doctors about climate change and health is a classic example of the logical fallacy that permeates so many public statements about climate policy. There are two elements in their argument: first, that climate change is a scientific fact and, second, something must be done. It is not necessary to dispute the first part, though the letter overstates the degree of consensus upon the extent and consequences of climate change with respect to health. The difficulty is that the averages that are usually… Continue Reading

Terry still baffled by Makelele’s comments

June 1, 2009 John Terry remains mystified why former Chelsea midfielder Claude Makelele accused him of being responsible for the sacking of Jose Mourinho. document.write(’ Makelele claims, in a new autobiography called “Tout Simplement” published in France on Saturday, that Mourinho and Terry fell out as the captain dealt with injury, and that Terry asked for a transfer. “I thought Mourinho was practically untouchable, but a lot of players had complained about him, notably John Terry,” Makelele wrote. “When John Terry let his discontent be known to [chief executive Peter] Kenyon and asked him for an immediate transfer, (owner Roman) Abramovich reacted immediately: the departure of Terry… Continue Reading

Charles A. Jaffe: Bogle: Expect slow recovery

By Charles A. Jaffe Inquirer Financial Columnist CHICAGO – Jack Bogle is still holding court, and his message has not changed. Buy-and-hold domestic stocks and bonds, cheaply, in an asset allocation that is appropriate for your age. Then let it play out, over time, so that it ultimately works in your favor. The founder of the Vanguard Group Inc., the man behind the first retail index fund, and a longtime champion of the small investor, Bogle is now 80, and his health has been poor of late. He had a heart transplant 13 years ago and has spent "the extra time I’ve been given" as something of the people’s champion, taking on the investment community’s flawed thinking and bad behavior,… Continue Reading

Sri Lanka says it’s poised for economic takeoff

VIJAY JOSHI The Associated Press SINGAPORE – Sri Lanka is poised for an “economic takeoff” now that its military has routed the Tamil Tiger rebels, the country’s foreign minister said Sunday. Rohitha Bogollagama told a high-level security and defense conference that the government’s priorities now are reconciliation with the Tamil minority in the Sinhalese-majority country, rehabilitation of Tamil civilians and holding free and fair elections. “Our people are weary of war, yet they are resilient and want to get on with their lives,” Bogollagama told the Shangri-La Dialogue, an annual meeting of defense ministers, officials and experts. The Sri Lankan government announced last week it had… Continue Reading

Cars: The 2009 BMW 750Li is a spaceship on wheels

I’m quite certain that somewhere right now, emotionally shattered BMW technicians are gathering in a church basement for a support group, huddled around the cookies and the coffee urn, their hands fairly vibrating with frustration. For as well deserved as is the title Ultimate Driving Machine, BMWs also have earned the reputation as the Ultimate Hangar Queen, taking up residence in dealership service bays and sending mechanics over the crumbling edge of insanity. Hello — sob! — my name is Dieter and I’m a BMW tech. . . . Hello, Dieter, keep comin’ back. . . . Yes, BMWs have middling initial quality and distinctly less-than-middling reliability — so sayeth… Continue Reading

Clark in position to win first PGA Tour event

Tim Clark watches the ball after hitting out of a bunker on the seventh hole Saturday at the Colonial in Fort Worth, Texas. Clark leads the PGA tournament at 17-under par. With $12.7 million in career earnings on the PGA Tour, Tim Clark has the dubious distinction of winning the most money without winning an event. Now he’s got a great chance to let someone else carry that burden. Clark shot a 4-under 66 on Saturday in the third… Continue Reading

The first whales washed up at 7:30 am (0530 GMT) on Saturday on a beach off the Cape of Good Hope, at the southern tip of the country. Officials from the South African National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) helped by dozens of volunteers tried to get the whales back into the water and out to sea again, but they could only save around 10 of them.
